I always
thought Chinese food was impenetrable for a home cook, but after moving to an area where the best Chinese was mediocre,
we decided we should try. I picked this book up on the strength of David Chang's review (published on the book),
and have to say I completely agree. One trip to the Asian grocery for a few staple ingredients and everything else has
been a quick pick up from the grocery store. The recipes are well explained and easy to follow and the results really
tasty. We've experimented with some substitutions, and the recipes lend themselves very easily to adapting to
what's available/on hand. I definitely recommend this book. From the explanations of ingredients to recipe
instructions, you'll be able to make something wonderful for dinner from day 1.

What a surprise and delight. I'd never heard of Ms. Dunlop, but bought this cookbook for my partner for
Christmas based on Amazon reviews. We have used this cookbook almost weekly since then. The tofu bear claws and other
dishes have become go-to's in our menu rotation. We keep stocked things like real Sichuan peppercorns, whole
Chinese red chile peppers, a variety of bean pastes and sauces, and just this week got a 4-pack of Sui Mi Ya Cai
(preserved Chinese mustard greens) for Ms. Dunlop's green bean recipe. These ingredients are not expensive, tend to
last a while, and you can find anything online if not in your local asian market. It's worth the modest investment
for the improvement in flavors.

I would add that i'm vegetarian and my partner is not, and this
wonderful cookbook has plenty of recipes to keep everyone happy.
